During the inspection it was noted the dining area is understaffed by officers and can present a 18 significant risk of violence towards inmates and staff.

Calipatria State Prison has a front gate that is not staffed at all. This could be a potential danger, as undesirable visitors might get onto the grounds with weapons and/or other contraband.

The facility is well run, with extensive inmate programs to include a peer support pilot program.

There has been a rise in fentanyl overdoses; Imperial County jail management reported to having Narcan available in all units to help alleviate this growing national problem.

The medical unit needs office furniture replacements, as current furniture items are damaged.
