Continue the programs. We believe they are making great strides that improve the well being of our community as well as providing a much needed service to the State of California. RESPONSE 1: I would agree that the Trinity County Conservation Camp has been an asset to the people of this county and the people of the State of California. With AB 109, "Realignment", this program will need to be carefully monitored. In the past low level offenders were selected from California's state prison system and put on work crews that would fight fires, clear brush and provide other labor intensive services to the county in which they reside. With "Realignment" these lower offenders are no longer sent to state prison but now are incarcerated in county jails. The State of California has advised counties that they can send these lower level inmates to Cal Fire to be placed in conservation camps but will charge the participating county $55 a day to train, house and feed these inmates. The county would also , still be responsible for those inmates' medical costs as well. Many counties, such as Trinity, cannot afford these additional costs and choose to not participate. This has left the State of California with no other option but to use higher risk inmates which could potentially put our communities at risk. Sincerely, Bruce Haney, Sheriff P.O.
