3.2 Anderson Valley Middle and High School

The school facility is in need of maintenance .

The school is in need of major repair. There is a relationship between these 2 findings. Some of the needs for maintenance have been caused by failures in our building systems, primarily leaky roofs. We have repaired the roofs and now we need to paint or replace the stained ceiling tiles. The classroom ceiling tiles will be replaced when we modernize the classrooms. If there are minor stains that don’t need replacing we will touch them up this summer. We will paint the ceiling tile at both ends of the main hallway this summer The school is in need of major repair. The administration and community recognize that our buildings are aging and we are in the process of modernizing. Unfortunately this is slow process and has to be done in phases as the money is available. We plan to sell more bonds next year and in the summer of 2015 we will complete a major remodeling of the campus. We have already completed some work at the site including the gym locker rooms, junior high, domes and cafeteria roofs. We have also replaced the heater/AC in the domes and junior high. We are scheduled to do quite a bit of painting this summer. We will paint the Jr. High hallway, the domes, and the front of the classroom wing. We also plan to replace some of the window trim where needed. In addition we will re-finish the gym floor, shampoo the carpets and strip and wax all the tile and vinyl. There is quite a bit of carpet that is in need of repair but we will hold off on the classrooms until we remodel next year. We did replace the carpet in the main hallway last summer. We installed carpet squares which are not subject to the seam unraveling that our other carpets have been subject to. We plan to use this product in all our classrooms when we complete the classroom remodeling. We recognize the need to keep up the maintenance when our classes are repaired. We are considering adding to our staff if the budget allows. We would also like to add more cleaning staff. As the budget cuts are restored, that is a priority.

The school is unable to participate in league track due to the disrepair of the track. Participation in track has not been a priority for our school. Less than half of the small schools participate in track. We field baseball, softball, co-ed tennis, and junior high soccer in the Spring and have been able to involve good numbers of students for these teams. In the past, especially when we had group home participation, we did field a track team and were able to compete using our facilities. Since the group home closed we have not had much interest in track. Transportation can also be a problem with 5 sports going 5 different directions.

The public address system did not reach all areas of the campus I am happy to report that this finding has been corrected. Over the Spring break we installed a new P.A. system that reaches all areas of the campus. We were able to use this system for a lockdown drill this Spring. We have a safety committee that has teachers, administrator, and board participation. This committee highlighted the need to improve our communication system and also asked that we install curtains so classroom visibility can be controlled in cases of emergency. This has also been completed. We have collaborated with our fire department to review safety issues.

There is a lack of signage directing visitors to the office. We are ordering signs indicating office location and the need to check in at the office. These will be put in place during the summer break
