R5By December 31, 2012, the Sheriff's Department and city police departments should evaluate and update their programs on responding to elder abuse cases. The City of Newport Beach, through its Police Department, has implemented this recommendation. The Newport Beach Police Department has assigned this task to Lieutenant Jeff Brouwer. He will conduct a comprehensive review of the Department's policies and programs for responding to elder abuse and make recommendations for improvement. The evaluation and update of programs for responding to elder abuse cases will be completed prior to December 31, 2012. The Department will further coordinate additional training for first responders as well as Investigators who conduct follow-up investigations for crimes against elders. This training will take place during calendar year 2013. Sincerely, Nancy Gardner Mayor of Newport Beach
