Current staffing of forensic specialists in the Crime Lab is limited to two well trained and experienced professionals.

The Sheriff's Department should hire a third full-time forensic specialist in the Crime Lab to provide additional support and long-term capability for personnel replacement. A copy of the full Grand Jury report and the Sheriff's response are attached to this staff report. The response from the Sheriff, which is due to the Presiding Judge , has already been provided to the Grand Jury and the Presiding Judge of the San Luis Obispo County Superior Court. No response is required from the Board of Supervisors. OTHER DEPARTMENT INVOLVEMENT/IMPACT The Grand Jury conducted a series of visits to each of the facilities addressed in the report in September and October 2014. The Grand Jury's report is based on jurors' observations, interviews and discussions with correctional deputies and other personnel at Juvenile Hall and the Sheriff's Department. 1 3 FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS There are no financial considerations associated with this item. RESULTS This response will meet the legal requirements and time frames for responding to a Grand Jury report with findings and delivers to the Board the Sheriff's response to the Grand Jury's 2014-15 report "San Luis Obispo County Juvenile Hall, Jail and Allied Agencies Inspection Report."
