R1Page 1Over the last several years the Rio Dell Police Department has worked closely with the school in regards to addressing bicycle safety concerns, specifically the use of bicycle helmets. The police department, solicited donations from local businesses and organizations and purchased helmets. Helmets were provided to local youth who are discovered riding without a helmet. Through this program we have seen a significant increase in compliance with the helmet law in regards to bicycles. We also take this opportunity to discuss bicycle safety with school age kids which is an ongoing process. The police department has participated in a bicycle safety event that is sponsored by the St. Joseph Health Care System and includes involvement from Cal Trans, the California Highway Patrol, the Rio Dell Volunteer Fire Department, and other local businesses and organizations. The Rio Dell Police Department also uses a qualified bicycle officer during special events and during some regular patrol shifts and that individual takes the opportunity to share safety concerns and educate bicyclists when they can, as part of our program. In the coming year we will continue to participate in and facilitate these programs on behalf of youth in our community. As additional opportunities arise we will enhance these types of activities as we are able.
